Historical essay on the Inuit takeover of education in Nunavik

In this historical essay on education, the first on this subject, Véronique Paul, in collaboration with Elisapi Uitangak Tukalak and Siaja Mark Mangiuk, recounts the stages and challenges involved in the takeover of schooling in the Inuit communities of Nunavik (Quebec) from 1950 to 1990. She shows how the Inuit resisted outside institutions and the methods they developed to integrate their language and culture into their schools. It looks in particular at two dissident communities, Ivujivik and Puvirnituq, which undertook to build and run their own schools for and by local people. The study provides a better understanding of the path taken by those who have lived through these changes and, consequently, gives an account of the situation in Nunavik with regard to the educational institution.

In French, Inuktitut and English.
